Becoming Assertive

Updated: Jul 4, 2018

Assertive communication enables you to be clear, stand up for your rights and be respectful of others. It is one of the most effective forms of communication and is often correlated with positive self-esteem and confidence. Assertiveness is essential for self-leadership and can be developed through coaching skills.

To develop assertiveness just takes practice but here's a few good tips to always remember:

1. Own your feelings in communication by using "I" statements and avoid blaming others for how you feel.

2. Communicate the other person's actions in a factual way.

3. Explain your interpretation of the situation and the reason why you feel like you do

4. Offer a solution to the situation that meets your needs but doesn't infringe on the rights of the other person

The more you practice this skill the more natural it will feel to you. You might also like to explore adding humour, smiling, having more open body language, tone of the voice and being aware of your breathing.
