Harvard-Backed Strategies to Advance Your Career and Get Promoted

This is the Career Coaching Introduction you need to advance your career!

We all want to grow in our careers, but the path to promotion can feel murky at times — like you’re doing all the right things, but still not quite getting recognised. The good news? Research from Harvard University sheds some light on this, and I’d love to share it with you, not just from an academic lens, but through a grounded and human-centred perspective. I’ve woven the insights from Harvard with what I see every day in my coaching practice, helping clients step into leadership roles and build careers they love. Let’s explore what truly moves the needle — and how you can take aligned, meaningful action.

1. Cultivate Relational Authority (Not Just Technical Excellence)

Harvard research highlights that while technical competence gets you in the door, it’s your ability to build trust and relational authority that propels you forward.

What does this mean in practice? It’s about how you collaborate, influence, and lead conversations. Promotions often happen not just because you do great work, but because you’re seen as someone who uplifts the whole team.

Coaching Tip: Start by mapping your relational ecosystem at work. Who are your key collaborators? Where can you invest in deeper, authentic relationships? Leadership is relational, not transactional.

2. Be Visible (Without Feeling Inauthentic)

Visibility is a theme that comes up time and time again. Harvard studies confirm that people who proactively showcase their work are more likely to be considered for advancement. But let’s be honest: self-promotion can feel uncomfortable, especially if you value humility.

Here’s the reframe: think of visibility as advocacy — for yourself and the impact you create. It’s not bragging; it’s helping others understand the value you bring to the organisation.

Coaching Tip: Regularly share your progress with your manager and team, and seek out opportunities to present your work in collaborative settings. Keep it values-aligned and service-oriented.

3. Adopt a Learning Mindset

Continuous learning and curiosity signal growth potential to leadership teams. According to Harvard research, employees who invest in professional development are more likely to be tapped for advancement.

Beyond formal courses, think about learning as everyday practice: seeking feedback, stretching beyond your comfort zone, and staying open to new perspectives.

Coaching Tip: Set a quarterly learning goal. Whether it’s improving your leadership communication, building industry knowledge, or strengthening emotional intelligence, intentional growth keeps you energised and visible.

4. Position Yourself as a Problem Solver

Leaders are looking for people who don’t just execute tasks but proactively identify solutions. Harvard’s research shows that initiative and creative problem-solving are standout traits in promotion decisions.

This is your opportunity to step up and think like a leader, even before you have the title.

Coaching Tip: Ask yourself: What challenges is my team or organisation facing? How can I contribute solutions or improvements? Start small, but think big-picture.

5. Seek Mentorship and Sponsorship

While mentorship provides guidance, sponsorship is what propels careers forward. Harvard highlights that sponsors — people in leadership positions who actively advocate for you — can play a decisive role in your advancement.

Building these relationships requires intention and courage, but they are invaluable.

Coaching Tip: Identify leaders you admire and look for natural ways to connect. Show up with curiosity, and let them see your potential through your engagement and contribution.

Advancing your career isn’t just about ticking boxes — it’s about stepping into your leadership potential, nurturing meaningful relationships, and aligning your growth with your values.

If you’re ready to take your next step and want tailored guidance, I’d love to support you. Career coaching can help you clarify your path, build your confidence, and move towards the promotion or career shift you’ve been aiming for. Let’s work together to unlock your next chapter.
